A Quick thought.......
I got talking briefly yesterday with a staff member of a raw diet shop, whilst I was dropping in a few leaflets advertising Safe Haven.
This lady's dog had just been diagnosed with a ruptured cruciate ligament in its knee joint. During the discussion of the subject, one of the things she said struck me. She made the comment that because she could not physically afford £3500 to have the surgery to correct the ruptured ligament that the vet had made her feel "that she was being cruel to her dog by not going ahead with the surgery".

There's a couple of points here. Firstly, whilst yes indeed, a ruptured cruciate ligament is regarded as a surgical condition, and it is by far and away best treated with surgery, is it appropriate to make someone feel guilty that they are not able to financially commit to surgery; and in doing so to suggest / imply that they are being cruel?

Yes surgery is the best option for the animal for many conditions we see, but we have to accept that financially, surgery is out of the reach of many owners. This is not to say that the surgery is over priced - I do believe £3000 -3500 for a cruciate surgery is a reasonable costing for the skill required, the required equipment and facilities, and the time and medications. If we actually knew what human surgeries cost we would be mind blown believe me.

But as vets - when our client says - "Im sorry but I simply cannot afford this option, even though I know its the best option for my animal" - it is then our responsibility to discuss alternative (if lesser) options for the animal (so long as quality of life can be maintained by those lesser options) where they exist - rather than make the owner feel guilty with the manipulative aim of trying to coerce that owner into putting themselves into financial difficulty.

This is part of the bond of trust - yes present the best option - and in some cases this may be the only option; but where possible we should help owners to find alternatives where "best medicine" cannot be achieved.
